New construction in rural Poland can be difficult—the predominant building stock in the countryside is a mix of traditional gabled houses and blocky, communist-era units. To navigate this motley architectural fabric, Prodom Architects drew inspiration from both building traditions when designing the Kowanówko House. The simplified gabled volume is reminiscent of Poland’s strong agrarian history, and is buttressed by a long cubic bar that recalls the simple geometric forms favored under communism. This novel hybrid showcases contemporary design’s ability to negotiate difficult historical precedents while providing simplified, flexible spaces suited to modern life.
